World Café is an enrichment for many seminars and workshops. It is based on the human preference for informal and intensive discussions in small groups. In a World Café, the participants sit at round tables. The tablecloths are made of paper and serve as a notepad. In this article, you will learn how to conduct a World Café with the help of Learning Map No. 2 from the Communication Guides and how to use the method successfully in your training sessions.
World Café is an inspiring method that is used around the world with great benefit and tangible pleasure. The new learning map from Neuland shows in a few words and with apt illustrations how World Café works and is used successfully in practice. Similar to the learning map for Open Space, Neuland's learning map provides a concise but effective guide for trainers who want to inspire with innovative methods.
How to make your World Café a success
1. Determine the goal and purpose
Is it about a shared vision of the future, an exchange of experiences, creative options for action or a stocktaking?
2. Formulate appropriate questions
Good questions guide, orient and focus. Example: "What would be possible in ten years' time if we hung up our trainers today and walked towards the future in seven-league boots?"
3. Open up an inviting space
Just think of a café or a salon where important conversations have taken place throughout history that have changed the world.
4. Listen and get involved
Every single voice should be heard, understood and valued. A World Café is about new perspectives in dialog.
5. Explain the rotation principle
A host is chosen at each table. After about 20 minutes, the participants move to other tables. The hosts remain seated and collect the ideas.
6. Evaluate the World Café
Have the hosts summarize first. Then all participants are asked.
7. Use the World Café if ...
you want to shed light on burning issues in an organization with those affected from different perspectives. For example, in the form of a knowledge café, marketing café, values café or strategy café. A minimum of 12 people are required.
