Creative learning methods - variety for grey learning processes

The creative learning methods "Total Physical Response", "Missing Vowels", "Letter Salad", "Timeline" and "Learnflow" bring variety and color to grey learning processes. In many cases, they are much more effective than the much better-known learning methods of "flashcards", "mind maps" and "think tanks". And they are even more fun. In this article, you will learn about five creative learning techniques.

Total Physical Response learning method
TPR is an effective method for memorizing difficult concepts or phrases. With "Total Physical Response", words are converted into movements or linked to a movement. This has a strong effect on long-term memory. TPR is suitable for memorizing terms from a wide variety of areas. It is important that you actively participate in the movement that you associate with the word.

Learning method "Missing vowels"
Write the words you want to learn without vowels (a, e, i, o, u) on paper cards and attach the cards to a wall. Write the correct word, translation or definition on the back in pencil.
Examples
  • Knntnss: Knowledge
  • Vrtfng: Deepening
  • Lrnn with Frd: Learning with pleasure
  • nfrmtn: Information

Learning method "letter salad"
Write the words you want to learn on cards, mixing up the letters. Write the correct word on the back of the card.
Examples
  • Fihlwluentngeck maldevelopment
  • schemurin numeric
  • pexerpl perplex
  • wchidichersprl contradictory

Timeline" learning method
A timeline is ideal for learning time sequences, procedures or processes. A timeline consists of 3 columns: In the first column, you enter terms, names and events. In the second column, write all information with numbers (dates, numbers, quantities and time). In the third column, draw a picture that is related to the term in the first column or the number in the second column.
If you want to go into the contents of timelines in more detail, fold the sheet so that not all columns are visible. First explain the sequence using the numbers and pictures (without names). Next, look only at the words and tell the sequence again, giving the numbers. Finally, only look at the pictures and explain the sequence again using the pictures. The exercise can be repeated as often as you like.

"Learnflow" learning method
Learnflow is an ideal technique for complex topics that need to be worked on, planned or learned in detail. First, write a title on a sheet of paper and then make three columns. The left-hand column contains the main topics, e.g. "Heart, veins and arteries". In the middle column, write down the sub-areas: for example, "Atrium and ventricle" under "Heart". The details are added in the right-hand column.
